“Ride to the Occasion” at ALFA College

In light of 2014 being the auspicious Year of the Horse, ALFA College is galloping into the Lunar New Year by organizing a special “Ride to the Occasion” exhibition at its premises in Subang Square. The exhibition, which kicked off on 15 January 2014 and will continue to run until 28 February 2014, features a range of artistic and creative expressions that depict the ‘horse’ as its main focus or theme.

Under its main ‘Postcard Design’ category and with a participation that was open to all ALFA students, staff, alumni and friends, the college received very encouraging responses; with submissions coming in from as far as Japan, United Kingdom, United States of America, Germany, Vietnam, Indonesia, Australia, New Zealand, Macau, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Cambodia, Thailand, Myanmar, the Philippines, China, Singapore, Iran, and Pakistan. Locally, much support was also received from students and staff of

  • R.E.A.L Schools, Suria Campus, Cheras
  • Artventures Studio, Taman Putra Prima Puchong
  • Dua Space Dance Theatre Academy, and
  • Pusat Seni Yap (PSY) Klang

The contribution from all parties was instrumental in making this initiative a success. In total, a staggering number of 1,258 card designs were received from a diverse range of participants, ranging from a four-year-old up to an 80-year-old! Every postcard is distinctly unique, with each having its own story or meaningful message to tell. All are now on display at the exhibition which is open to the public till the end of February. So spread the word and come visit ALFA College to view this mesmerizing collection of art.

Besides postcard designing, participants also indulged in various other creative activities or categories such as ‘Wooden Horse Design’, ‘Paper Cutting’, ‘Horse Puppets’, ‘Merry-Go-Round’, ‘Traditional Malay Horse Dance or Tarian Kuda Kepang’, ‘Horse Masks’, ‘Horse Lanterns’ and ‘Chinese Calligraphy’. For the Traditional Malay Horse Dance, participants were required to combine elements of both the Malay and Chinese cultures, in line with the ‘1Malaysia’ concept.

The ultimate aim upon compiling all of the above horse-related designs is for ALFA College to ‘prance’ into the Malaysia Book of Records by having a collection of at least 1,000 different horse designs. Being inducted into the prestigious and prominent publication would create a NEW record of sorts. On top of this, ALFA students came up with a ‘stop-motion’ presentation of all the designs as a culmination to the event. “Ride to the Occasion” was featured in several English and Mandarin newspapers such as The Star, China Press and Sin Chew Daily. It was also covered on the local 8TV news which featured interviews with ALFA lecturers Mr. Koh Sim Hoo and Ms. Ong Siew Guet.
